One possibility for optimizing in-plant resource efficiency is the use of waste heat from industrial processes for heating purposes. This affects many branches of industry, as a number of production processes generate a certain amount of excess heat available for a meaningful use. This good practice example illustrates the use of environmental technology in a conventional industrial operation and illustrates the benefits that can result from resource-conserving measures.

The core business of Zellstoff Pöls AG is pulp and paper production. The waste heat generated at the plant site in Pöls from the waste gas process and the caustic boiler has been converted into hot water for district heating since the completion of the project presented here.

The extracted heat (about 96,000 MWh / a) to the district heating network of the district heating supplier Bioenergy Aichfeld for the large area of Judenburg, Zeltweg and Aichdorf will be delivered via a newly constructed heat transport pipeline. This means that around 2.5 million m3 of natural gas and 8.5 million liters of fuel oil are substituted each year. The cooperation between the paper manufacturer Zellstoff Pöls AG and the district heating company Bioenergy Aichfeld means that the existing energy potential will be used sensibly. Around 15,000 households will be supplied with sustainable heat from renewable energy sources.
