Austria is a technology leader in fermentation and energy production from biogenic waste. In addition, Austria is home to the world's first green brewery.
In the biogasse sector, the domestic bioenergy sector generated sales of 170 million euros in 2011. 783 primary employees (full-time equivalents) are working in area of bioenergy use. About three-quarters of the economic effects are caused by the operation of existing plants as well as by fuel procurement.
In the first quarter of 2011, there were 362 biogas plants with a total output of 104 MW found in Austria. The Green Electricity Act assumes a considerable increase in biogas plants.
